This new search tool is in its trial stage. It replaces the old search facilities on the LGPN website which, despite best efforts, could not be kept available due to technical obsolescence of hardware and software.
We are aware of the slowness of this trial version, and are working to amend the situation.
Please note that as the query is running in the background, a narrow, pulsating green stripe will appear. In case of noticeable slowness, please refrain from running your query again and again. Thank you for your patience!
Enter the search field in your preferred style (whether in Unicode Greek or transliterated). For example, to find the Greek name Ἀλεξάνδρα, you can enter your query in Unicode as Ἀλεξάνδρα, in its unaccented form Αλεξανδρα, or transliterated as alexandra; n.b. case and accents are ignored.
Instead of trying a name query, you can browse LGPN by volume, just click on the region of interest in the sidebar to the left.
It is possible to find entries matching a pattern using ? and * wildcards for missing characters.
? is the single wildcard or joker, replacing exactly one character
* is the multiple wildcard or joker, replacing any number of characters
So a search for δ?μο* will produce names beginning Δαμο- and Δημο- . A string δ*μο* will give the same results, but also any other names which begin with Δ- and also contain -μο- , such as Διδυμος and Δοκιμος. Search for *νδρα will return all names ending with νδρα, e.g. ῾Αγεισάνδρα or Κασσάνδρα.
From this page you can very quickly jump to a list of persons matching a name pattern (when using the search field), or belonging to a certain LGPN volume (when clicking on one of the volume links).
Both methods ultimately lead to the Database Search page which is the main control room for refining your query. There you can filter down results with the help of multiple facets.
Facets are the fastest way to narrow down your searches, simply ticking a box for the Name, Volume or Century that interest you. Current search results will be constrained to show only entries that match exactly all your specified criteria.
Though the quickest and most convenient, only the most frequent facet values are shown for the current result set. If you'd like to filter by a less popular value, e.g. find matches from Synnada, you can use the little search box below the facet to search for them. As you type, a list of suggestions will appear, together with a person count for that value.
Nota bene that facets can only be used to find exact matches. If you would like to search for multiple values, e.g. all names starting with μ, you need to use a field query with a wildcard pattern instead. The most important thing to remember about facets is that they are always presented for the current result set, therefore if you have entered a query pattern or checked any of the facets, the counts will be shown for the current matches, not the entire LGPN database.
